AI piano transcription is the automatic conversion of a piano recording into written music: which keys were pressed, when, for how long, and how hard. A neural network trained on piano audio estimates every note event, and a notation pipeline turns those events into an engraved score with a detected key signature and a grand staff split into right and left hand.
The hard part is polyphony. A piano piece is almost never one note at a time — it is chords under a melody, overlapping pedal tones, two independent hands. Simple pitch trackers collapse this into a single guessed line; a polyphonic transcription model reports simultaneous notes separately, which is the difference between a lead sheet caricature and a usable draft of the actual piece.
Treat the output as a strong first draft, not a finished edition. Transcription is estimation: fast runs and dense pedal can produce an occasional extra or merged note. The draft is still hours faster than starting from silence — correct it in any notation editor via the MusicXML export.

Yes. The model is polyphonic, so simultaneous notes are detected separately, and the notation pipeline splits them onto a grand staff — notes below middle C to the bass clef, above it to the treble. Very dense pedal passages may still merge some inner voices.
On reference audio the engine scores 92% note F1 on single lines and 74% on polyphonic piano. In practice that means a clean recording gives you a score that is right in its bones and needs light correction — not a finished edition, and not a random guess either.
A piano note is rich in overtones, and the model occasionally reports a strong overtone as its own note. A cleanup pass removes most of these automatically; the few that survive are easy to delete in a notation editor via the MusicXML export.
