Yes. It's a chromatic tuner — it identifies whichever note is closest rather than assuming a fixed instrument, so it works for guitar, bass, violin, wind instruments and voice alike. Tune until the marker sits centre and the reading turns to zero cents.
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone, the standard unit for describing how far off pitch something is. Under about 5 cents is imperceptible to most listeners and counts as in tune here. Around 20 cents starts to sound noticeably off, and 50 cents is halfway to the next note.
Neither. The stream is analysed frame by frame in your browser and discarded immediately — nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. Stopping the tool releases the microphone and turns off your browser's recording indicator.
Background noise, room reverb, and instruments with strong overtones can pull the detector to a harmonic — usually an octave up or down. Get closer to the mic, play a clean sustained note, and reduce background sound. The readout is smoothed to keep small wobbles from twitching the display.
Roughly 55 Hz (A1) to 1600 Hz (about G6), covering bass guitar through soprano voice and most lead instruments. Notes outside that band fall outside the search window and won't register.
