What does converting audio to sheet music involve?

Going from sound to score is really two problems. First, transcription: a neural network listens to the waveform and decides which pitches sound at each moment, where each note starts and stops, and how loud it is. Second, notation: those raw note events have to be quantized to a rhythmic grid, given a key signature, split across treble and bass staves, and engraved into readable music — the part most converters skip.

This tool does both. The transcription model is polyphonic, so chords and accompaniment survive rather than collapsing into a single line. The notation pass then detects the key by weighing every note's length and strength, snaps timing to the grid, and renders the result right on the page.

By convention, music this side of a human editor is a draft: expect to correct occasional notes, especially from reverberant or busy recordings. The point is that you start from a score that is mostly right instead of an empty staff — and the MusicXML export drops that draft straight into MuseScore or any other editor.

Can I convert audio to sheet music online free?

How readable is the sheet music, honestly?

For clean solo-instrument recordings, very: detected key signature, sensible rhythms, both staves populated. For dense or reverberant mixes you will see occasional extra notes and odd rhythms — the draft is for correcting, not framing. We would rather tell you that here than let the first conversion tell you.

Which audio formats can I convert?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, OGG and M4A. Lossless sources (WAV, FLAC, AIFF) transcribe slightly better than heavily compressed MP3s, because compression discards exactly the quiet inner voices a transcriber needs.

Does it write the correct key signature?

The key is detected from the whole performance, weighted by how long and how strongly each note sounds. On our benchmarks this correctly identifies the key where naive per-note analysis fails. Enharmonic spelling follows the detected key.

Why is the score in 4/4?

Estimating meter from raw audio is genuinely unreliable, and a wrongly guessed 3/4 reads worse than an honest default. The notes and their durations are correct regardless — changing the time signature is one click in MuseScore and the music re-bars itself.

Can I edit the sheet music?

Yes — download the MusicXML and open it in any notation editor: MuseScore (free), Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, Flat. Every note, rhythm and marking becomes fully editable there.
