A pitch changer moves every note in a recording higher or lower by a fixed musical interval, measured in semitones — the distance between two adjacent piano keys. Shift by +2 and a song in C major is now in D major; shift by -12 and everything drops a full octave. The point is that the tempo stays put: a three-minute track is still three minutes long after the shift, which is what separates a real song pitch changer from simply playing the file faster or slower.
That separation takes two steps. The audio is first stretched in time with an overlap-add algorithm (WSOLA) that re-aligns small overlapping grains so sustained notes do not phase against themselves, then resampled so the pitch lands on the new key. Speed is the same process run without the resampling step, which is why this tool can change one without the other, or both at once.
What it cannot do is make the result sound recorded in the new key. Beyond about four or five semitones, vocals start to sound artificially small or large because the singer's formants move with the pitch, and dense mixes pick up a slight granular texture. For transposing a backing track a few steps to fit a vocal range, slowing a solo down to learn it, or matching keys between two tracks, that is not a problem; for an octave shift on a lead vocal, it is audible.
One step per semitone, up to an octave in either direction, with quick buttons for the ±1 and ±2 shifts that cover most vocal-range fixes.
Changing pitch does not touch tempo. A separate speed slider (50–150%) changes tempo without touching pitch, so you can slow a passage down to practise without it dropping in key.
The original key is detected from the audio and the target key is shown next to it as you drag the slider: A Minor → C Minor, not just "+3".

Small shifts of one to three semitones are hard to tell from the original. Larger shifts are still clean enough for practice and karaoke, but vocals start to sound unnaturally thin or thick beyond four or five semitones because the singer's formants move with the pitch, and dense mixes gain a slight granular texture. The export itself is lossless 16-bit WAV, so nothing is lost after the shift.
