A sub bass has a pitch whether or not you chose one, and if it fights the key of the track the low end turns to mud. Finding the note it currently sits on tells you exactly how far to tune it.

Sample diggers

A one-shot, a vocal chop, a field recording — none of them come labelled with a key. Knowing the note lets you drop the sample into a project already in tune rather than discovering the clash in the mix.

When one note in a line refuses to resolve by ear, isolating it and reading the answer is faster than looping it another twenty times — and the cents reading tells you whether it was bent rather than played straight.

How pitch detection works

  1. 1. Upload a sound

    Works best on one instrument or voice at a time — a bass note, a vocal line, a sample you want to key-match. Everything is decoded and analysed locally.

  2. 2. Autocorrelation finds the period

    The signal is compared against time-shifted copies of itself. The shift that lines up best is the length of one cycle, and one over that period is the fundamental frequency.

  3. 3. Get the note and the hertz

    The frequency is mapped to the nearest equal-tempered note at A4 = 440 Hz. Notes are ranked by how long they sound, so a held note wins over detection flicker.

What is pitch, and how is it different from frequency?

Frequency is the physical measurement — how many cycles per second the waveform repeats, expressed in hertz. Pitch is how we hear that: the musical note name. A 440 Hz tone is the note A4. This tool reports both, since one is what a tuner shows and the other is what you'd write on a score.

What does a note name like A4 or C3 mean?

That's scientific pitch notation: the letter is the note, the number is the octave. Middle C is C4 at about 261.6 Hz, and the A above it is A4 at 440 Hz — the standard tuning reference. Each step up in octave number doubles the frequency, so A5 is 880 Hz.

Does it work on a full song?

Not reliably. Autocorrelation is a monophonic technique — it looks for a single repeating period. On a full mix with drums, bass, chords and vocals at once, whichever partial is strongest tends to win, so the answer is more of a melody sketch than the truth. Isolate the part first for a trustworthy reading.

Why did it not detect anything?

Silence, noise and unpitched percussion have no periodic cycle to find, so the detector returns nothing rather than inventing a number. Very short clips, heavily distorted sounds and audio recorded at a very low level can also fall below the confidence threshold.

What frequency range does it cover?

About 55 Hz (A1) to 1600 Hz (roughly G6), which covers bass guitar through most vocal and lead-synth range. Sounds below or above that band are outside the search window and won't be reported.

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser with the Web Audio API. The file is decoded on your device, analysed there, and never transmitted anywhere.
