The frequency is mapped to the nearest equal-tempered note at A4 = 440 Hz. Notes are ranked by how long they sound, so a held note wins over detection flicker.
Frequency is the physical measurement — how many cycles per second the waveform repeats, expressed in hertz. Pitch is how we hear that: the musical note name. A 440 Hz tone is the note A4. This tool reports both, since one is what a tuner shows and the other is what you'd write on a score.
That's scientific pitch notation: the letter is the note, the number is the octave. Middle C is C4 at about 261.6 Hz, and the A above it is A4 at 440 Hz — the standard tuning reference. Each step up in octave number doubles the frequency, so A5 is 880 Hz.
Not reliably. Autocorrelation is a monophonic technique — it looks for a single repeating period. On a full mix with drums, bass, chords and vocals at once, whichever partial is strongest tends to win, so the answer is more of a melody sketch than the truth. Isolate the part first for a trustworthy reading.
Silence, noise and unpitched percussion have no periodic cycle to find, so the detector returns nothing rather than inventing a number. Very short clips, heavily distorted sounds and audio recorded at a very low level can also fall below the confidence threshold.
About 55 Hz (A1) to 1600 Hz (roughly G6), which covers bass guitar through most vocal and lead-synth range. Sounds below or above that band are outside the search window and won't be reported.
