What does converting MIDI to MP3 actually do?
A MIDI file is not a recording. It is a list of instructions — which note, when, how hard, on which instrument — and it weighs a few kilobytes because it contains no sound at all. To turn it into an MP3, something has to play those instructions and record the result. That something is a synthesizer and a soundfont: a library of sampled instruments mapped to the 128 General MIDI programs, so program 0 sounds like a piano and program 33 like a fingered bass.
This converter renders your file with FluidSynth and the FluidR3 General MIDI soundfont, the same open soundfont that ships with most Linux music software and that several dedicated MIDI sites use as their default. The rendered audio is stereo, 44.1 kHz, encoded as a 192 kbps MP3 or a 16-bit WAV. Because the sound comes from the soundfont, two converters can produce very different results from the same MIDI file — that is why people on r/midi talk about trying different soundfonts until a file sounds right.
Generic file converters treat MIDI like any other audio format and never tell you what it was rendered with. This page does the opposite: one clear soundfont, a player on the result so you hear it first, and a link to the reverse tool if you want to go from audio back to editable notes.

Is this MIDI to MP3 converter free?
Yes, completely. No account, no credits, no watermark, no queue, no ad between the upload and the download. The only limits are a 2 MB file size, which is far larger than almost any MIDI file, and 10 minutes of rendered audio.
Why does my MIDI sound different here than in my software?
Because MIDI contains no sound. Your software plays the notes through its own instruments; this page plays them through the FluidR3 General MIDI soundfont. If your file relies on instruments outside the General MIDI set, or on a specific synth, the render will use the closest GM program instead.
Which soundfont do you use, and can I change it?
FluidR3 GM, an open General MIDI soundfont with sampled acoustic instruments. It is a single, known default rather than a menu of options — most files sound right with it, and you can always hear the result before downloading. If there is demand we will add a second soundfont.
Can I convert MIDI to WAV instead of MP3?
Yes. Switch the toggle to WAV before dropping the file, or render the WAV from the result screen after the MP3. WAV output is 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo and lossless; MP3 is 192 kbps.
What file types and sizes are accepted?
.mid and .midi files up to 2 MB, in either format 0 or format 1. Files that would render to more than 10 minutes of audio are refused before any audio is produced.
How long does the conversion take?
Usually a few seconds. A three-minute MIDI renders in well under ten seconds; the first request after a quiet period can take slightly longer while the renderer starts.
Is my MIDI file kept?
The MIDI is processed in memory and discarded when rendering finishes. The rendered MP3 or WAV is stored so your download link works; there is no account, so nothing is tied to you.
