Who needs beat positions

Video editors cutting to music

Cuts that land on the beat read as intentional and cuts that miss read as sloppy. A list of beat timestamps gives you markers to place on the timeline instead of scrubbing for transients by eye.

Loop makers

A loop that doesn't start exactly on a downbeat drifts a little further out every repeat. The first-beat offset is the trim point that makes an exported loop sit in time.

DJs finding the downbeat

Knowing where bar one starts is what lets you drop a track on the phrase rather than a beat or two off. That's especially useful on intros with ambiguous or absent percussion.

Remixers aligning stems

Stems from different sources rarely share a start offset. Beat positions for each give you a common reference to line them up against, rather than nudging one clip until the flams disappear.

How beat detection works

  1. 1. Upload a track

    The audio is filtered to a narrow band around the kick drum (90-150 Hz), where the beat lives most clearly, and analysed on your device.

  2. 2. Onsets become a tempo

    The loudest transient in each quarter-second window is a candidate beat. Measuring the gaps between them and tallying the most common spacing gives the tempo.

  3. 3. The grid gets anchored

    A constant-tempo grid is snapped to the strongest detected onset and walked back to the first beat in the file, so the printed times line up with what you hear.

What's the difference between a beat finder and a BPM detector?

A BPM detector answers how fast — one number for the whole track. A beat finder answers when — the timestamp of each individual beat. If you're beatmatching you only need the tempo; if you're cutting a loop, placing a sample, or syncing video to music, you need the positions.

What is the first beat time for?

It's the offset from the start of the file to the first downbeat. Most tracks have a fraction of a second of silence or a pickup before the beat proper starts. Trimming to that offset, or using it as your loop start, is what makes an exported loop sit in time instead of drifting.

Does it assume 4/4?

The bar grouping does — beats are grouped in fours because the overwhelming majority of popular music is in 4/4. The beat positions themselves are time signature agnostic. If your track is in 3/4 or 6/8, read the beat times and ignore the bar column, or use the Time Signature Finder first.

Why are the beats evenly spaced instead of following the performance?

The grid is generated at a constant tempo from the detected BPM, then anchored to a real onset. That's what you want for programmed and produced music, which is almost always on a fixed grid. For a live performance that speeds up and slows down, the grid will drift away from the audio over time.

Why did it not find a beat?

Audio without percussive transients — ambient pads, solo vocals, sustained strings — has no onsets to lock onto, and the tool reports nothing rather than fabricating a grid. It also rejects signals that are too uniform in level to contain a real beat.

How much of the file is analysed?

The first 90 seconds. Tempo is stable across a track in the vast majority of cases, so that window is enough to establish the grid, and capping it keeps the analysis fast in the browser.
